Overview

Community Engaged Learning at MacEwan University is a project-based teaching-learning strategy that connects classroom theory to challenges experienced in the "real world" by our Community Partners (CP).

How this works

Working in small groups, students in the third year of their undergraduate studies at MacEwan University with a major or minor in Sociology will work with organizations to design and complete a specified project over nine (9) weeks.

The instructor and Experiential Learning Facilitator will select community partners project mid-Aug. They will confirm with the selected community partner by the end of Aug. In Sept, you will virtually meet with your student consultant teams to brief them and answer questions related to your project. Students will have approximately nine (9) weeks to work on your project.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

What you get

For project #1: community partners will be invited to student final presentations and will receive a final briefing paper/summary report.

For project #2: community partners will be invited to student final presentations and will receive the resource created.

For project #3: community partners will be invited to student final presentations, will be invited to participate in the virtual workshop presented by students, and will receive a copy of workshop presentation materials.

Note: While we cannot guarantee a final functional project, the community partner organization will receive their final project deliverables by the end of the term.

Specific dates:

· Mid-August 2021– The instructor and Experiential Learning Facilitator will select community partners.

· Sept 21, 2021 – Community partner is available to talk about their project with student teams (the pitch).

· Dec 7, 2021 – Community partner available for student team presentations.

Project Examples

Examples of Suitable Project Topics

Potential projects include:

Project #1- Do you need a briefing paper or summary report to provide information quickly and effectively about a social issue relevant to your organization (e.g., racism, sexism, or income inequality)? Students will find, gather, and report on information from a variety of sources (academic sources and grey literature) to inform your organization about key research findings and considerations.

Project #2- Do you need a resource created to (a) provide key background and contextual information about a social issue (e.g., racism, sexism, or income inequality), and (b) identity and describe relevant policies and useful initiatives, programs, and/or resources in place to address this social issue? Resources include, for example, summary reports, brochures, information posters, and leaflets.

Project #3- Do you need a workshop developed and presented (virtually) to youth about a social issue (e.g., anti-racism, anti-heterosexism, anti-sexism)? Workshops will focus on creating an awareness of an action on a social issue that impacts a community.

Marketing plan covering all aspects previously mentioned

The exact nature of the deliverables will vary depending on the scope of the project.

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Community partners will need to ensure that all data/ information is available by the course's start date.

Availability to meet with your student consultant at least three times throughout the term.

Availability to meet on Sept 21, 2021, to talk to students and on Dec 7, 2021, for students final presentation

Prompt response when feedback is required (48 hours).

Community Partner is available for 'the pitch' and final presentation.

A community partner is a nonprofit, human service, community organization.

The community partner is willing to use Riipen for project management. We will provide training on how to use Riipen.
