To craft a marketing plan and communication outreach program for the Green and Gold ( G&G) Community Garden (www.greengoldgarden.com), located on the University of Alberta south campus in Edmonton, AB. The G&G garden represents a wonderful example of a sustainable urban food system that is run by over 100 diverse and elderly volunteers. Established over a decade ago, the G&G garden has been growing and selling a variety of fruits, berries, vegetables and flowers to the general public. All of the funds generated by these sales are then sent to Tubahumurize (www.rwandawomencan.org), an NGO in Rwanda that supports women and families recovering from violence. In the last few years, however, our customer base has grown stagnant. Students will be asked to do an analysis of our customer base and create a market plan to help us grow our customer numbers and continue to maintain and support our partnership with Tubahumurize.

Deliverables

Although we currently have a website, our current marketing and communication strategy is generally through word of mouth, email lists and tends to be limited to the communities that located nearby the garden in SW Edmonton.

During the summer and fall term students will work independently to conduct an analysis of our current marketing and social media presence. As well, students will be asked to create a plan for a more robust and successful marketing plan that will allow our customer base to grow and information about the garden's activities to be more widespread throughout Edmonton.

The students will receive the following supports in their work:

  1. Training and access to our email list/ social media/ website platforms
  2. Access to previous customer and volunteer questionnaires
  3. Receive mentoring and support on ethical community based research

About the company

Our interdisciplinary department is home to 24 full-time faculty members from three social science disciplines: Anthropology, Economics and Political Science. Taking direction from the strengths and areas of scholarship of our faculty members, emerging trends in the social sciences and global social and cultural needs, we offer students diverse opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. Enriching opportunities include an annual interdisciplinary undergraduate conference on emerging global issues and trends, our award-winning Model United Nations Club, a field placement and competition participation in economics and archeological field training and an anthropological field seminar in alternating years. In addition, our anthropology lab is a valued teaching and research facility that houses the university's human evolution and skeletal cast collection, as well as faunal specimens and artifacts such as pottery and stone tools.
