For more than 45 years, the Sport Management program at Durham College has provided students with the unique opportunity to receive vital on-the-job training as they prepare for their chosen career in the business of sport. The purpose of this component of their education is to apply the knowledge gained through extensive classroom preparation and study. There are, in fact, TWO distinct academic programs in sport management at Durham College:

  • Sport Management, three-year diploma program
  • Sport Business Management, one-year graduate certificate program

All students from both programs will have the following availability:

  • Five days a week (Mon-Fri) for 15 weeks from January 2021 to April 2021
  • A total of approximately 500 hours over the duration of the placement

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, student placements will predominately occur virtually but can be on-site with approval.

Project Examples

With a unique combination of business skills and a solid understanding of the sports industry, sport management students can provide assistance in the areas of professional sport, amateur sport, community sport, sports facilities, school sport, sporting goods, and sport + event partners.

The following are examples of deliverables DC Sport Management students can provide your organization through field placement:

  • Provide operational and planning support to events and programs
  • Deliver sporting events, programs, and other sport ventures
  • Assist with facility operations
  • Coordinate scheduling of programs, events, training, or facility usage
  • Contribute to brands’ marketing strategies
  • Assist in fulfillment of sponsorship contracts and corporate partnership activations
  • Manage online presence through social media, and event or program registrations
  • Organize promotions, contests, and community-based camps or leagues
  • Assist with public relations and corporate communications of sport organizations or businesses
  • Assist with team or league operations
  • Research, prospect and develop sales of tickets, registrations, or other sport products
  • Deliver high-quality customer service to corporate partners and consumers
  • Work behind the scenes for various sporting events, programs, and ventures
  • Assist in daily operations of sport organization or business
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Permit the student to participate in minor and major projects, either independently or within a group.

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.

Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Provide the appropriate number of hours of field-related experience (as noted above).

Submit a job description that will enable the student to have a positive and challenging experience.

Meet with the student regularly to discuss progress and complete the required student evaluations.

Complete the required documentation, as indicated by Durham College faculty and staff.
